Budrus: Occupation tries intimidation in attempt to subdue popular resistance against Wall
Latest News, Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, February 28th, 2007
Occupation Forces descended upon the village of Budrus during the night of 27 February village, throwing sound bombs and flare lights amongst the houses. A curfew was imposed as jeeps drove through the village leaving pamphlets warning villagers not to come close to the Apartheid Wall. The tactic of intimidation came as an attempt to subdue the popular resistance against land theft and ghettoization of Budrus.
The flyers warned that any damage caused by the people to the Apartheid Wall and its infrastructure will be considered a danger to the overall security of the area and that such actions would be dealt with severely. This new strategy to scare and demoralize the resistance of the people came as a response to the village’s continuous activism and steadfast position of rejecting the presence of the Apartheid Wall on their land.
Last Friday, the 23 February, a powerful demonstration was organized in the village and on other occasions the Occupation has proved to be unable to prevent the people from destroying parts of the Wall which has swallowed up their lands and left the village isolated.
It represented the latest stage in the Occupation’s attempt to scare villagers and break the popular resistance in Budrus. Half a year ago, Occupation Forces conducted house visits during the night and rounded up all the men of the village to take their foot and fingerprints.
