Trying to Cross the Wall in Abu Dis
Credit: PENGON/Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign.       Date: September 12th, 2003.

Abu Dis has been transformed into ghetto by the Apartheid Wall—residents are unable to go outside their imprisoned neighborhood into the rest of Jerusalem, torn away from schools, markets, family, and deprived of the basic ability to travel. These photos, from early September 2003, show the daily routine of residents in Abu Dis attempting to “cross the Wall”. The “openings” in these pictures have now been sealed shut and razor wire stretches across the top of the Wall. There are but two narrow places were razor wire has yet to be placed—but to cross one must be able to climb the three meter concrete edifice and willing to jump down to the other side. It is expected here that the Wall will be reinforced with another four meters.
