Cyclers against the Wall tear down the Apartheid Wall
Worldwide Activism, Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, November 18th, 2008
On November 16, Forum Palestina and Palestinian solidarity activists in Rome built a mock wall across the main street, Via dei Fori Imperiali, in the center of Rome to protest the Apartheid Wall being built in Palestine. A critical mass group called Cyclers Against the Wall participated in the event, and with the wave of the “starting” flag – a Palestinian flag – the cyclists drove at the mock wall, and broke it down.
In addition to this main event, activists also handed out leaflets, put posters around the city, and spoke on a loudspeaker, in an effort to raise awareness about the Occupation of Palestine. The event came as part of the 6th annual Week Against the Apartheid Wall. Since the Via dei Fori Imperiali is closed to vehicles on Sundays, hundred of pedestrians and tourists walk through the area, and as such, the mock wall demonstration was hailed as a success that drew much interest and attention.
