***image1***Anti-Wall demonstrations this week commemorated the life of Basem Abu Rahma, who was killed last week in Bil’in. Several were detained and at least 37 were wounded in Ni’lin, Bil’in, Jayyus and al-Ma’sara. 25 of the wounded are residents of Bil’in, where a memorial was set up on Friday for Abu Rahma. Youth in Jayyus have also reported that soldiers have started using only live ammunition against village demonstrations.

On January 4, the people of Jayyus and the popular committee of the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign held a day of action protesting the new Israeli plan to finalize the Occupation’s control of Palestinian land by building a new settlement just behind the Apartheid Wall on their isolated lands.

***image2***On December 10, 2004, Occupation Forces began bulldozing and uprooting trees in a wide swath of land in the western part of Jayyus, a village located in the Qalqiliya district. The destruction of land and trees by the Occupation Forces is to build a new settlement on these village lands, which have been isolated by the Apartheid Wall.

On Nov. 29, Jayyus residents awoke to find yet a new disaster befalling their already beleaguered Palestinian farming village of 3,000, in the form of a massive new land confiscation.

Construction of the Apartheid Wall by Occupation Forces in the village of Jayyus, located in Qalqiliya district, began in October 2002. During the first stage of the construction of the Wall, 72% of Jayyus’ lands, some 8,600 dunums, were confiscated and now fall behind Wall. The Wall now totally separates the people of the village from their livelihood (70% of the 3,000 inhabitants of Jayyus have been totally dependent on agriculture). Tens of thousands of trees have been uprooted, and valuable water resources, olive and citrus groves, and greenhouses are isolated behind the Wall.

***image2***In September 2002, when the farmers in Jayyus found some hand written papers affixed onto their trees, they thought that these must be something that belongs somewhere else. Then, a few weeks later, they started to see bulldozers come to cut down their olive trees and destroy the land. A few months after that, the Wall started to be erected. One year later, they found that they could only get access to their land through a military gate, and only with conditional permits.

Settlers Burn More Olive Trees in Marda

Last Monday, August 9th, settlers burned 60 olive trees in the north side of Marda village, Salfit district. It's not enough for the settlers that the farmers are not even able to collect there their olives, because of the different intimidation policies that Occupation Forces and settlers use against them to prevent them from reaching their lands, but they also blatantly destroy the people's lands. Burning their trees and damaging their lands is yet another way to control Palestinian's access to their lands and sources of living.

In areas where the first phase of the Apartheid Wall was "completed", the next steps are now clear: continue what the Wall started with more land destruction, more house demolitions and more policies to prevent people from reaching their lands, including those left on the eastern side of the Wall.

Large numbers of Occupation Forces and settlers recently invaded the lands isolated behind the Apartheid Wall in Jayyus, and on a hill which is located on Jayyus lands close to the Wall on the western side, have now established a military "camp." Occupation forces together with the settlers have installed a number of tents and have reinforced them with concrete blocks. In addition, they have also started opening new roads in the lands with signs labeled with the names of previous Occupation leaders as well as the names of alcoholic drinks, which hold certain military meanings.

On Monday March 22nd all gates in Qalqilya were closed after a march following the assassination of Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, and no farmers were not able to reach their lands. Occupation soldiers began firing on people near the Wall and Daood Nofal, 17 years old, was shot while standing on the roof of his house.

Israeli Officials summoned the owners of the lands to meet today in the confiscated lands to review the orders. Israel intends to use the land to open a new settler road linking the illegal Israeli settlement of Karne Shamron to other settlement blocs inside the green line.
