Norwegian Leftist government party renews support for BDS

The Socialist Left Party (SV), one of three parties in the Norwegian government, has renewed its support for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel. The Party’s Congress adopted a resolution unanimously on March 25th named “Sanctions against the Occupier – not the Occupied.”

The new resolution contains amongst other things, the condemnation of the Occupation’s policies, a focus on the arms trade, a consumer boycott and a demand that new regulations must be made so that the State Pension Fund will divest from Israeli companies.

The Socialist Left Party made international headlines last year when it adopted a civil society campaign calling for a consumer boycott of Israeli products which was backed explicitly by Norway’s Finance minister, a party member. Away from the media attention, a larger number of people are constantly working in Norway to move the country to a clear stand, enacting the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.

Here are some samples from the text (unofficial translation):

“Israel is continuing its illegal expansion of settler colonies and the building of the apartheid wall in violation of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in the Hague and demands from the UN General Assembly.
(….)
“The [Norwegian] regulations for the arms trade must be examined and the government must work to make deals with other countries to ensure that Norwegian-produced weapons and weapon parts are not being further exported to Israel.
(…)
All lending and exchange of military equipment between Norway and Israel must cease.
(…)
“Tear down Israel’s apartheid wall!”
(…)
“SV will continue the work to promote a Norwegian consumers’ boycott of Israeli goods.”
