1)Arrests of HRDs
An Associated Press photojournalist was arrested and briefly detained at the weekly anti-wall protest in Beit Ummar. Two students from the Al-Ibrahimi school in Hebron were detained for throwing stones on a settler’s car.
2) Violence against HRDs
There was a serious escalation of violence against human rights defenders in the Silwan district of Jerusalem. A Silwan resident was shot dead by an Israeli settlement guard, leading to further clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian HRDs throughout the Jerusalem district, resulting in the hospitalisation of several villagers suffering from tear gas inhalation. One HRD from Bil’in was injured in his leg with a live 0.22 bullet from a Rudger sniper rifle during the weekly protests. Two journalists and a local activist were also injured with rubber bullets. Three Palestinian and two Israeli HRDs were injured with tear gas at the Nabi Saleh weekly protest.
3) Collective punishment
Israeli occupation forces entered Bil’in on Monday 27 September and clashed with local young residents and fired tear gas. Following the killing of Silwan resident Samer Sarhan, Israeli forces entered several neighbourhoods, firing and throwing tear gas at local residents protesting against his death.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate on Thursday condemned violence against media workers in occupied East Jerusalem a day earlier, when protests followed the fatal shooting of Silwan resident Samer Sarhan. The syndicate said in a statement that settlers attacked members of the press with impunity. A number of journalists were seriously injured while covering the demonstrations in the flashpoint Jerusalem neighborhood, the syndicate noted. Four journalists were injured and another four were arrested, Ma'an's correspondent reported Wednesday. The syndicate urged the affected journalists to speak out about the incident. |
