Repression Update

Scope: Repressive measures against Palestinian human rights defenders active against the Wall and the settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Period: Monday , June 21st to Monday,  June 28th, 2010

Summary:  

1) Arrests of HRDs

Few arrests have been recorded this week. Israeli Occupation Forces arrested three HRDs from Beit-Jala (Bethlehem District).

2) Violence against HRDs

One 16 year old child from Silwan lost his right eye after being hit by a tear gas canister and one woman suffered a miscarriage. A number of other injuries were recorded this week, in Bi’lin, Beit Jala and Silwan.

3) Collective punishment

Israeli Occupation Forces destroyed land in the villages of Ni’lin, Bi’lin, and Beit Jala when they drowned the area in tear gas to suppress the weekly protests against the Wall. In al-Walajeh, Israeli Occupation Forces cut down 50 olive trees.

Circumstances: These international activists were arrested for their participation in Beit Jala’s weekly protest against the Wall and settlement construction. They were released later that night at 11p.m.

Place: Bi’lin (Ramallah District)

Date: June 25th, 2010

Name: 50-year-old university professor Radwan Yassin

Circumstances: Sustained injuries when Israeli Occupation Forces fired a tear gas canister at his hand during the village’s weekly protest against the Wall.

 

Place: Silwan, Jerusalem

Date: June 25th – 26th, 2010

Names:

Muhannad Qawasmi (16 years old), lost his right eye after suffering a direct hit by a tear gas canister in his eye.
A women from the Samreen family living in Silwan suffered a miscarriage as a result of the repression while her other children were beaten by the occupation forces.

50 unidentified HRDs sustained minor injuries during clashes.

Circumstances: Clashes erupted after the Friday protest against last week’s preliminary approval for an East Jerusalem redevelopment plan that involves 22 house demolitions in Jerusalem’s Silwan neighborhood. 20 were injured on the first day of the clashes and 30 on the second.

Circumstances: Sustained injuries after being hit with rubber bullets when Israeli Occupation Forces suppressed Beit Jala’s weekly protest against the Wall and settlement construction.

Date: June 27th, 2010

Circumstances: Sustained injuries after Israeli Occupation Forces assaulted them during the village’s weekly protest against the Wall.

Place: Silwan, Jerusalem

Date: June 25th – 26th, 2010

Details: One eyewitness saw yellow tear gas on the hands and bodies of the demonstrators and many protestors complained about burns resulting from the gas.

Date: June 21st, 2010

Circumstances: Israeli Occupation Forces cut down 50 olive trees on land belonging to al-Walajeh resident Mousa Abd al-Sheikh.

 

Place: Bi’lin (Ramallah District)

Date: June 25th, 2010-06-28

Circumstances: Israeli Occupation Forces burned three to four acres of land when they drowned the area in tear gas to suppress the village’s weekly protest against the Wall. The destroyed land belongs to several Bi’lin families who depend on the land’s agricultural output.

 

Place: Ni’lin (Ramallah District)

Date: June 25th, 2010-06-28

Circumstances: Israeli Occupation Forces burned one acre of land when they drowned the area in tear gas to suppress the village’s weekly protest against the Wall. The destroyed land belongs to the Kanaan family.

 

Place Beit Jala (Bethlehem District)

Date: June 27th, 2010

Circumstances: One and a half dunams of agricultural land burned as a result of Israeli Occupation Forces’ firing of tear gas to suppress the village’s weekly protest against the Wall. According to eyewitness, the Occupation Forces deliberately fired the tear gas near civilian homes which terrified the villagers and especially the children.
