November saw a flurry of BDS activities in Argentina, where workers from the recovered factories, along with the global umbrella organization for community radio, committed to active support of the 2005 Palestinian BDS call.
Workers in the recovered factories in Argentina pledged to support the BDS call. These workers are part of a larger movement in Argentina that began in 2000 during Argentinaâs economic crisis. At that time, the first workers resisted eviction from their places of work, and with the bankruptcy and flight of the management, took upon themselves the duties of production, administration and marketing. Since 2001, 205 factories around Argentina have been reclaimed by the workers.
In a statement issued in support of the BDS call, representatives from eight of the recovered factories pledged to âensure that our work sites, our businesses and factories, [â¦] will be spaces free of Israeli apartheid. We resolve to ensure we do not have contracts and business between our recovered companies and Israeli companies, the State of Israel or companies that support the State of Israel.â
In addition to committing to raise awareness in Argentina about the Palestinian struggle, workers will be encouraged to âparticipate in and support global and national BDS initiatives [and] require the state of Argentina to cut relations with State of Israel until such time as the end of apartheid and freedom of the Palestinian people is achieved.â
Speaking about South Africa, the statement emphasized, âover a period almost 20 years, workers and their movements were at the forefront of global support of South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. Today, Palestine is a challenge for humanity.â
In the city of La Plata, Argentina, the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) also broke new ground when they issued a statement supporting the BDS movement at the tenth Global Conference of Community Radio broadcasters. AMARC is an organization that brings together more than 4,000 community radios across 115 countries and has the potential to make a significant contribution to the BDS movement.
Addressing the connection of the Israeli media to state policy, the AMARC statement noted that âIsraeli media institutions and the vast majority of Israeli journalists have either contributed directly to maintaining, defending or otherwise justifying the above forms of oppression, or have been complicit in them through their silence.â
AMARCâs role in the BDS movement revolves around media boycott, and calls for AMARC members to ârefrain from participation in any form of cooperation, collaboration or joint projects with Israeli media institutions; advocate a comprehensive boycott of Israeli media institutions at the national and international levels, including suspension of all forms of funding and subsidies to these institutions; [and] promote divestment and disinvestment from Israel by international media institutions.â
These successes represent an important step in Argentina, where in the face of growing Israeli political and business interests, people have started to lay the foundations of the BDS movement.

Declaración de las empresas y fábricas recuperadas para el boicot, desinversiones y sanciones hacia Israel
El llamado de la sociedad civil Palestina para el boicot, desinversión y sanciones (BDS), publicada en el 2005, está construyendo un poderoso movimiento global de solidaridad a través de millares de diversas campañas e iniciativas de BDS.
Este movimiento mundial que exige el respeto al derecho internacional y de los derechos humanos de parte de Israel ya ha demostrado su fuerza en la lucha contra las polÃticas israelÃes de ocupación, el colonialismo y el apartheid. Arraigada en la conciencia y la iniciativa de las masas y con el apoyo de sindicatos, partidos, movimientos y organizaciones de la sociedad civil y personalidades, el llamado BDS esta presionando con éxito a las empresas y los gobiernos para detener su complicidad con Israel.
El llamado Palestino establece que el boicot, desinversión y las sanciones deben ser impuestas y mantenidas hasta que Israel:
âcumpla su obligación de reconocer el derecho inalienable del pueblo palestino a la autodeterminación y acate completamente los preceptos de la legislación internacional por medio de:
1. La finalización de su ocupación y colonización de todas las tierras árabes y el desmantelamiento del Muro.
2. El reconocimiento de los derechos fundamentales de los ciudadanos árabe-palestinos de Israel para una igualdad completa.
3. Respetando, protegiendo y promoviendo los derechos de los palestinos refugiados a retornar a sus casas y propiedades como lo estipuló la resolución 194.â
La solidaridad de los trabajadores y sus movimientos ha apoyado múltiples luchas con ayuda y apoyo vitales y ha permitido a los trabajadores fortalecerse contra la opresión y la explotación.
La lucha de Sudáfrica sirve como modelo para este internacionalismo obrero. A lo largo de un perÃodo de casi 20 años, los trabajadores y sus movimientos fueron la vanguardia en el apoyo mundial de la lucha de Sudáfrica contra el apartheid. En el respaldo al boicot y la realización de campañas de BDS, el movimiento de los trabajadores ha presionado a los gobiernos para la imposición de sanciones, a las empresas para el retiro de sus inversiones.
Hoy en dÃa, Palestina es un desafÃo para la humanidad. El sitio de la Franja de Gaza continúa y sigue siendo “la mayor prisión del mundo a cielo abierto”, con una economÃa en quiebra. Israel está intensificando su programa de construcción de asentamientos coloniales en los territorios palestinos ocupados y sigue construyendo el muro del apartheid que prohÃbe a los trabajadores llegar a sus puestos de trabajo. La discriminación racial contra los ciudadanos palestinos de Israel es cada dÃa más visible y opresiva, mientras que la cuarta generación de los refugiados palestinos se ve sin el derecho fundamental a regresar a sus hogares negado por Israel.
Como trabajadores en Argentina sabemos muy bien lo que significa vivir y luchar contra la represión, la desaparición y otras formas de terrorismo de Estado, asà como el combate permanente por los derechos democráticos y contra la persecución y criminalización de la protesta, convencidos de que la solidaridad internacional en la lucha es la herramienta más poderosa de los trabajadores y los pueblos oprimidos del mundo.
Por lo tanto, es necesario romper el silencio y la complicidad internacional impulsando esta campaña desde cada uno de nuestros lugares de intervención cotidiana, trabajo y estudio. Y, en este sentido, hemos decidido asegurar que nuestros lugares de trabajo, nuestras empresas y fábricas recuperadas, no tendrán ninguna connivencia con los crÃmenes israelÃes y serán espacios libres del apartheid israelÃ.
Hemos resuelto:
1. Asegurarnos de no tener contratos y negocios entre nuestras empresas recuperadas y empresas israelÃes, el Estado de Israel o empresas que apoyen al Estado de Israel, ya que esto constituye ayuda financiera directa a la ocupación y sostiene la economÃa de guerra y apartheid israelÃ.
2. Generar una mayor de conciencia acerca de la lucha Palestina y la ocupación, apartheid y el colonialismo israelà entre los trabajadores de las empresas y fábricas recuperadas en Argentina y en el extranjero.
3. Participar y apoyar las iniciativas mundiales y nacionales de BDS.
4. Exigir al Estado Argentino la ruptura de relaciones con el Estado de Israel hasta tanto se termine el apartheid y se logre la libertad del pueblo palestino.
Cuando los gobiernos del mundo hacen la vista gorda ante las injusticias; cuando se dejan seducir por la justificación de Israel de la brutalidad a través del pretexto de “seguridad,” cuando silencian las crÃticas de terrorismo de Estado a través de la patraña de “antisemitismo” – entonces es hora de que los trabajadores de todo el mundo mantengan posiciones firmes y de principios contra la hipocresÃa y los dobles discursos. Es hora de estar no solo en las palabras con el pueblo palestino y es necesario actuar sobre su llamado a apoyar su lucha contra la ocupación. Para garantizar nuestros derechos, paz y justicia, en esta región y en el mundo, es necesario que los trabajadores, más allá de las fronteras impuestas, nos organicemos para llevar adelante la lucha.
AMARC 10 motion to support Palestinian civil society call for BDS
Whereas Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people comprises the following:
Denial of its responsibility for the Nakba â in particular the waves of ethnic cleansing and dispossession that created the Palestinian refugee problem â and therefore refusal to accept the inalienable rights of the refugees and
displaced stipulated in and protected by international law;
Military occupation and colonization of the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) and Gaza since 1967, in violation of international law and UN resolutions;
The entrenched system of racial discrimination and segregation against the Palestinian citizens of Israel, which resembles the defunct apartheid system in South Africa;
Whereas Israeli media institutions and the vast majority of Israeli journalists have either contributed directly to maintaining, defending or otherwise justifying the above forms of oppression, or have been complicit in them through their silence;
Whereas all forms of international intervention have until now failed to force Israel to comply with international law or to end its repression of the Palestinians, which has manifested itself in many forms, including siege, indiscriminate killing, wanton destruction and the racist colonial wall;
Whereas people of conscience in the international community of journalists and media producers have historically shouldered the moral responsibility to fight injustice, as exemplified in their struggle to abolish apartheid in South Africa through diverse forms of boycott;
Whereas the growing international boycott movement against Israel has expressed the need for a Palestinian frame of reference outlining guiding principles.
In the spirit of international solidarity, moral consistency, and resistance to injustice and oppression
Be It Resolved That AMARC 10 supports the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israel;
Be It Further Resolved That AMARC 10 representatives comprehensively and consistently boycott all Israeli media institutions and products as a contribution to the struggle to end Israel’s occupation, colonization and system of apartheid, by applying the following:
1. Refrain from participation in any form of cooperation, collaboration or joint projects with Israeli media institutions;
2. Advocate a comprehensive boycott of Israeli media institutions at the national and international levels, including suspension of all forms of funding and subsidies to these institutions;
3. Promote divestment and disinvestment from Israel by international media institutions;
4. Support Palestinian media institutions directly without requiring them to partner with Israeli counterparts as an explicit or implicit condition for such support;
5. Work toward the condemnation of Israeli policies by pressing for resolutions to be adopted by our respective radio stations, associations, and organizations.
Be It Further Resolved That, unless violating any of the above criteria, in the absence of official Israeli sponsorship, the individual product of an Israeli media worker per se is not boycottable. Be it further Resolved that we do welcome the creation of community radios in Israel and welcome them to join AMARC.
